Feel The Nature
Chalakudy River takes birth in the upper
reaches of the Western Ghat mountains, flowing for about a hundred miles before
it reaches the dense Vazhachal forest. Many leading environmentalists consider
the area to be a unique riparian ecosystem with mind boggling bio-diversity. The
forest is home to Asiatic Elephants (experts consider the state of these
protected forests to be one of India's successful elephant conservation
efforts), Tigers, Leopards, Bison, Sambar, Lion-tailed Macaques and the river a
habitat for numerous species of fresh water fish. Four species of hornbills
endemic to South India — the Great Hornbill, Malabar Pied Hornbill, the Malabar
Grey Hornbill, and the Indian grey hornbill coexist, all living in harmony with
ancient tribes - Kadars, the Malayars, the Muthuvars and Mannaans amidst teak,
bamboo, and eucalyptus.
The river has also
birthed many scenic waterfalls in its course with falls at Athirapilly near
Casa Rio being the largest in Kerala, surging around large boulders and rocks,
dropping over eighty feet in three plumes that are spectacular during the
monsoon.
