Valparai, a small town set in the Annamalai Hills across the border in Tamil Nadu, is surrounded by undulating slopes draped in evergreen forests, coffee and plantations. Situated about 3,500 feet (1,100 m) above sea level, The lush forests of the Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary are a fascinating experience for wildlife enthusiasts and home to Leopards, Elephants, Boars, Lion-tailed macaques, Gaur, Spotted Deer, Sambar and Giant Squirrels. Numerous species of bird, including the Great Hornbill, thrive in the area. The area is also home to the Nilgiri tahr, an ungulate endemic to the region and known to be very reclusive and hard to spot. The reservoir at the Aliyar Dam and the Monkey Falls are scenic spots and worthy of a visit as well.
Daily Jungle Safari trips go into the forest at different times of the day from Chalakudy to Malakkappara subject to approval from the forest officials. The guided safaris are conducted in closed jeeps that travel through the lush evergreen rainforest of the Sholayar ranges, passing numerous sprightly waterfalls, cloud capped lofty mountains and tea plantations. On a good day guests will have the opportunity to spot Asiatic Elephants, Tigers, Leopards, Bison, Sambar, Lion-tailed Macaques and numerous species of birds including four species of hornbills endemic to South India.
